The colours of Dia de los Muertos
The colours of Dia de los Muertos
What colours do you think of when you think of someone you’ve loved and are no longer with us?
As we enter November, the nights are noticeably longer than the days. Each day will be a little colder, a little darker, and a little damper. It is fitting that November is the month of remembrance.
Remembrance, it’s such a messy thing. We are both thankful and ungrateful; saddened and yet relieved; hopeful and discontented, all at the same time.
Messy can be beautiful too. Laughing and crying at the same time or being angry yet forgiving, both healing us and strengthening us.
The Mexican celebration of Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, captures these chaotic feeling wonderfully. It’s a mish-mash of ancient Mexican culture mixed with modern day beliefs cumulating in an explosion of colour and celebration in honour of departed family and friends.
Colour is such a huge part of the celebrations.
Bright and exciting colours are used in food, masks, costumes and decorations. These colours help us honour and celebrate the confusion of feeling and emotions of remembrance.
It’s the colour pallet of the heart and you can use it to accent a special room, add punch to your front door, or create a very special space to remember.
